The regular meeting of the Board of Education was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Devlin in the Mabelle B. Avery Board of Education meeting room.

3. STUDENT REPORT
Discussion

Fiona Cheyney and Dominic Zuccalo, SHS students, updated the BOE on SHS events.  The Semiformal was held at the SHS gymnasium on 12/13/19.  The Candy Cane Fundraiser to support domestic abuse shelters was advertised.  The Unity Team had a field trip to the Youth Leadership Summit for grades 3-5 where they taught two different sessions.  Prior to the Summit, they tested their sessions at SES.  Broadway Night will be held on 2/21/20.  The Winter Concert will occur on 1/14/20.  Midterms begin on 1/22/20 and run through 1/27/20.  Students have been discussing different pep rally ideas for March.  The Class of 2022 held a fundraiser at Friendly's on 1/13/20.  In sports, wrestling has done well with two tournaments and three meets.  Boys basketball has been doing well with Alex Barresi scoring 1000 points.  Girls basketball has been trying hard to achieve success.  Hockey has been well supported by peers, and there have been more participants in indoor track this year.

Rationale

Mrs. Emily Galloway, Grade 1 teacher at Somers Elementary,  will be taking Maternity/Child Rearing Leave until the end of this school year.  Her last day will be February 28, 2020.

Rationale

Mrs. Lindsey Duperre, Kindergarten teacher at Somers Elementary School, is going out on Maternity Leave.  Her last day will be May 22, 2020.

11.1. Somers Elementary School Improvement Plan

Mrs. Dina Senecal, Principal of Somers Elementary School, will be there to answer any questions.

Mrs. Dina Senecal, SES Principal, updated the BOE on the SES School Improvement Plan.  In Language Arts, the focus has been on Fountas & Pinnell (F & P) implementation which is coming along very well.  There has been positive feedback from the teachers.  There will be Professional Development in February for the next phase of F & P "Reading Mini-lessons."  In Math, there are two programs that are being piloted--Investigations and Bridges.  A math program will be chosen in March or April.  Discussion ensued regarding program costs and the current math program.  Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the Curriculum Committee needs to endorse the program prior to going to the BOE.  Mrs. Senecal stated that she will speak with Superintendent Czapla regarding deadlines.

Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the next meeting will be held on Monday, 2/10/20, at 6 p.m.  The January CABE packet should arrive by the end of January.  There will be one policy change regarding the graduation date.
